Wolford Sr. was found guilty in 2006 of 17 counts of theft and securities charges, and he was sentenced to 75 years in prison. The two were ordered to pay restitution, civil penalties and attorney and investigation fees.

I began investigating Wolford and his son, Rod Wolford Jr., in 2001 after numerous allegations that they'd defrauded dozens of homebuyers and sellers in central Iowa. The Wolford Group Inc. bought and sold houses using high risk land contracts that did not carry the same protections as traditional mortgages.
But investors and customers who bought and sold property from the Wolfords learned too late that the family run business lacked enough money to fulfill contractual obligations. By the time the Wolford Group Inc. was forced into bankruptcy in 2003, more than 200 people had lost thousands of dollars each, had their credit ruined, were sued by banks or kicked out of their homes.
