Bennington County Deputy State's Attorney Gabrielle Gautieri said the state was asking for a $50,000 bail because of Hammac's connections to Connecticut, his lack of ties to Vermont and because he was unemployed.

Hammac was arraigned on a felony charge of aggravated operation of a motor vehicle without the owner's consent Tuesday.
When Benjamin J. Hammac, 20, of Connecticut, didn't return, Bennington Subaru sales manager Robert King thought he had quit.

Bennington Police Cpl. Christopher Lauzon said he received a call from Hammac, also on Nov. 7. Hammac denied taking the car and said he had taken a bus to Connecticut on Nov. and there was no record of Hammac buying a ticket. In addition, a Vermont State Police trooper had stopped Hammac while he was driving the Subaru Impreza on Nov. 3 in Bennington, according to the affidavit.

According to Kouassi, any bail request would present a hardship for Hammac.
